Spend a little time in Florida, especially the Bay area, and you’ll quickly adjust to the fact that strip malls are where the action happens. Café Ponte – one of the best restaurants in the Tampa Bay area – is a case in point.

One step inside, one bite of food, and you’ll quickly forget the traffic whizzing by or the low-end Tex-Mex chain a few doors away. Chef Chris Ponte’s modern American culinary aesthetic is so composed and exacting, you’ll likely forget everything that happened before you sat down.

The usual suspects are on the menu, like butternut squash ravioli or California-ized pizzas, but you’ll rarely find more iconic and elegant versions of those dishes. Ponte has that rare gift of being able to meld ingredients, seasoning and heat into a seamless whole, on almost every plate served.
