Although it’s been the hub of South St. Petersburg’s political and cultural scene for several decades – and a favorite spot for stumping presidential candidates -- Atwater's Cafeteria is the kind of place you might pass by if you didn’t know better. Since 1977, Atwater's has maintained essentially the same line-up of classic Southern cuisine, served on a cafeteria line, and the same well-worn interior. Be generous and call it the patina of history, maybe, but the dilapidated feel even extends to the appearance of the food on the line.

Appearances, though, can be deceptive. Atwater's same-old-same-old is still some of the best soul food in the region. Like the humble chopped steak, which in these hands is a symphony of salt and beef, bolstered by rich gravy carrying more of the same — better than it looks, better than it has any right to be. Not only does it redeem its lackluster appearance, Atwater's chopped steak redeems the entire genre of humble cafeteria meat patties. Fried chicken, pigs feet, stewed chops and all the greens and starches are just as fine.

Homey and satisfying, but there's also a sort of culinary genius here that goes beyond just good comfort food. Through fine technique and judicious choice of dishes, Atwater’s has perfected the often dreary prospect of eating food served out of steam trays.
