For more than 20 years, Stella and Dino Kalamaras' serenely sophisticated restaurant with billowing window treatments, changing art exhibits and cozy back patio has attracted a devoted following, becoming part of the fabric of Hillcrest as well as a destination for people serious about food.

But even an institution has to stay fresh, and the arrival of chef Todd Atcheson has invigorated both the menu and the restaurant's reputation for innovative cuisine.

Some menu items change with the season and according to what's in season; like many of his forward-thinking contemporaries, Atcheson worships at the shrine of the ultimate ingredient. In the summertime, Meyer lemons have been paired with shrimp, and seared scallops with a vegetable succotash; in the fall, a Sonoma duck breast gets a sweet potato risotto and berry reduction. Niman Ranch pork chops are permanent favorites, whether done with an Asian pear compote or apple chutney, and a fragrant cioppino is always a satisfying standout.
