The Union League Cafe, a center of the New Haven dining scene for decades, always insists that it offers “casual, bistro-style” dining, but let’s face it: the place doesn’t have a casual bone in its body. This is impeccable French service and style, with a masterful chef who builds on classic techniques to breathe life into dishes that speak of both the old and new worlds. The duck confit is legendary, and can be enjoyed with a fine glass of wine in Bar des Artistes – which is certainly a more relaxed space than the restaurant’s historic dining room (patriot Roger Sherman’s home was once there), and yet, still too skilled and polished to be called casual.
