There’s a reason why Chef Prasad Chirnomula has been called “the most exciting Indian chef in America.” In a handsome, contemporary space he serves modern Indian cuisine that borrows intoxicating flavors from the breadth of his vast homeland. A few familiar dishes are on the menu, but most are revelations, such as the Konkan Crab appetizer, featuring lump crab with coconut milk, mustard seed and chilies, and a selection of chat, traditional Indian street food. The wine list is long and sophisticated, while the cocktails are made with fresh fruits, vegetables and, if you choose, lassi. This is by no means bargain fare, unless you count the Sunday buffet brunch, which provides an excellent introduction to Thali’s superior cookery for under $20.
