After some 20 years in the business, Thep Lela still packs in fans of its delectably authentic Thai cuisine. “We used to be in a tiny little space,” says co-owner Natalie Kamloon. “Then we doubled in size, and we’re still full all the time.” Each dish is made to order and innovative recipes are one of the pairs’ specialties. When Ginger Sea Bass is on the menu it’s a great choice, with a special sweet/spicy sauce. Another seasonal item is the Pomelo Salad made with lemongrass, peanuts, coconut, sections of grapefruit-like pomelo and a delicate ginger dressing. Other favorites are the grilled rack of lamb, and the signature pad Thai. The Kamloons insist that their restaurant use only fresh ingredients and this, combined with the care taken for each dish and the expanded setting, keeps throngs of patrons coming back and voting Thep Lela Best of Marin. Natalie’s father opened the first Thai restaurant in the Bay Area 40 years ago, and 15 years later she and co-owner/ husband Sak Kamloon arrived from Bangkok and entered the family business. Despite their success, the Kamloons have no plans to open a second venue. “If you run more than one restaurant,” says Sak, “it’s hard to control the quality.”
