Although Pavich’s Brick Oven Pizzeria doesn’t have any room for interior eating (there’s one table stationed out on the sidewalk), that’s merely a source of its charm, as Pavich’s instead operates as a crucial take-out space for an otherwise restaurant-starved residential tract. It just so happens, however, that this neighborhood pizza joint serves the best pies in the South Bay (and, arguably, beyond). There are a few factors that contribute to that greatness, but probably none more so than the restaurant’s brick oven. It’s in there that the pizzas are cooked exactly as they should be, their fresh, handmade crusts quickly crisped and just a bit blackened. Most unique here is the Croatian pizza, a heap of flavor derived from smoked beef, roasted and fresh bell peppers, red onions, olives, mushrooms and a sprinkling of feta. 18-inch pizzas are the standard at Pavich’s, though there are also more personal (and manageable) 12-inch versions. And while the pizzas are certainly supreme, there’s a lot of depth here, including monstrously good calzones that can be stuffed with however many ingredients you like for no extra cost. Beyond that, there’s even a small Croatian menu that includes fresh-baked flatbread, stuffed cabbage, beefy links of chevapchichi and plyeskavitza, a kind of Croatian quasi-burger that packs in roasted bell peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and a smear of homemade garlic sauce all between that fantastic flatbread.
