The quintessential neighborhood restaurant, Basi Italia is hidden away among the historic homes in a Victorian Village alley. The cozy spot boasts a charming courtyard terrace, filled with colorful flowers and ready-to-be-picked herbs, and an even more intimate dining room inside. Talented owner John Dornback -- who studied at the French Culinary Institute under Jacques Pepin -- is one of the friendliest chefs in town. Though his food is always serious, his mood usually is not, and that translates into unpretentious, delicious fun. The guy does everything -- shakes cocktails, readjusts wobbly tables -- with a big smile, all while serving up sexily plated dishes with bold but controlled flavors and strong nods to Italy and seasonality.
