Gruet is not so much a steakhouse as it is an upscale steak "den." What once housed an actual firehouse, and then a long-established restaurant called The Monte Vista Firehouse, Gruet opened its doors in 2006 and has since gone on to become one of the more elegant restaurants in the city. Plush, roomy booths with backings constructed of old wooden wine racks, provides an intimate setting for simple but refined appetizers such as the Smoked Salmon Carpaccio, artfully painted with creme fraîche and dotted with fresh herbs and black caviar and a rich and creamy Brie and Potato Soup, among many others.
The menu boasts a solid roster of steak cuts, including the requisite Filet Mignon (as well as a 6 oz. Petite Filet option), a huge Bone-in Rib Eye and a surprisingly tender and modestly-priced Flat Iron Steak. Non steak options include a Pan-Roasted Halibut and a Grilled Salmon entree in the seafood department (as well as crab and lobster options) and inventive Chicken, Lamb and Pork dishes to round the menu out. As this is a steakhouse, vegetarian options are relegated to a pair of salads.
Steak lovers seeking a high ounce count in their meat with no regard to doneness, grilling craft or presentation, need not apply at Gruet. To be certain, a meal here is an elegant, drawn out, almost European affair. Your waiter won’t rush you to turn the table and you can sit and sip your wine (either by one of two fireplaces or on the patio) at a snail’s pace. Who wants to rush this kind of affair anyway?
